In this musiana moment, Kalikaprasad Bhattacharya of the folk band Dohar, shares his experience of meeting Shah Abdul Karim, the legendary Folk icon of Bangladesh. An experience that perhaps changed his view of life forever...

About Kalikaprasad :

Kalikaprasad, originally from Silchar, Barak Valley, Assam, is one of the lead singers in a group of folk musicians who call themselves Dohar, which began its journey in 1999. Dohar, a Bengali word, which means Chorus, following a solo lead voice, is a manifestation of the philosophy based on which the group was formed. Dohar’s mission is to bring the rustic songs of the soil to the urban listeners in its original form and flavour. Dohar thus consider themselves as the chorus of the Bauls and Fakirs of Bengal and the Northeast of India. The group visualize their musical space as a forum for cultural activists, who intend to energize its listeners with the melodious magnetism and simplicity of folk tunes of the East of India and Bangladesh. The group has a collection of more than 6000 folk songs from the foregoing region in their repertoire, while they go around collecting more. They also play rare and ethnic folk instruments like the dhol-dhak-mridanga-dhamsa-madol (drums), banshi-shinga-pepa-shankha (flutes), sarinda(bowing), ektara-dotara-soraj-anandalahori (stroke string), dubki-kartal-kansar-ghungur-dafli (percussions), all collected and nurtured from these regions.
